Over the weekend I decided to print a new variant of Aberarth Mill. This is a beautiful mill near Aberaeron. I originally produced the collagraph plate after a lovely walk around the village and nearby countryside a few years ago. I was immediately drawn to this building with its rugged stone exterior and contrasting wooden panels. I like the variety of textures and patterns within the composition.
For this print, I began by applying the first layer of ink over the entire plate; a warm terracotta colour made up of yellow ochre, arylide yellow, cadmium red and sepia.
Once this had been through the press the resulting impression depicted the various textures and tones in a warm haze.
My next step was to add a thin layer of yellow ochre to the side of the building shrouded in sunlight as well as some areas in the surrounding vegetation.
I then mixed duck egg blue using ultramarine, yellow ochre and opaque white and applied this to the sky and a few other areas of the plate to add interest and bring the piece together.
