Gwen Bramley

Gwen Bramley is an artist, producing atmospheric collagraphs and intricate linocuts along with luxury, handprinted cards from her small studio in Wales. Her passion for printmaking was first realised while persuing a degree in Fine Art at Aberystwyth University’s School of Art. During her time in Aberystwyth, she was profoundly inspired by the landscapes that surrounded her, reproducing the rough seas and dramatic cliffs in plein air paintings and textural, collagraph plates.
During 2020, inspired by seeing the detailed linocuts produced by her contemporaries, Bramley decided to give linocut another try. With sharp, mushroom-handled tools in hand, she carved her first linocut card design of Porthcawl harbour. This became the first of many handcarved, handprinted card designs, with subjects ranging from local landscapes to the wild birds that visit her garden.
At the beginning of 2023, eager to develop new skills in linocut, Bramley subsequently created a multiblock linocut of nearby Margam Abbey. This has propelled her to produce a growing collection of multiblock prints. These prints celebrate sublime scenery and architecture, with a combination of illustrative mark making and meticulously layered colours.
