This past week has been incredibly blustery at times and very rainy too. Although unsurprisingly the foxgloves are looking rather windswept, one little perennial copes marvellously with the weather and always delights me on a rainy day as it glistens with the droplets captured on its leaves.
This is Alchemilla Mollis, a hardy perennial that grows in clumps from rhizomes.
Its beautiful lime green leaves and small yellow flowers certainly brighten up the borders. Historically, Alchemilla  was used for healing wounds among other herbal uses. Alchemists believed the purest water could be collected from the precious droplets formed on the surface of its leaves.
I made this drawing from life, the plant was in a pot so I could spend time drawing the leaves and capturing the droplets whilst being inside. I used a 5B pencil to create depth and tone to bring the leaves out from the paper and emphasise the folds within the leaves.
