This series of prints based on Broad Town White Horse were created for a commission that I completed in 2022. My client requested a series of unique prints to be displayed alongside each other, depicting this chalk hill figure with the hazy, changing light cast across it during dawn and dusk.
The history of this white horse holds some mystery, but it is generally thought that William Simmonds, the farmer of nearby Littleton Farm, carved it during 1864. This stocky white horse has a powerful yet graceful air, adding a sense of energy to the still, surrounding landscape.
To produce these highly textured collagraph prints, I used earthy colours as requested by my client to create a sense of naturalism and unity between each of the prints. I worked closely with my client, emailing throughout every step of this commission’s journey from the preliminary drawings to the final prints.
The Broad Town White Horse was one of three White Horses commissioned, the others commissioned were Cherhill White Horse and Uffington White Horse.
