Cherhill White Horse

This series of prints based on Cherhill White Horse were produced for a commission that I completed in 2022. My client requested a group of unique prints of this chalk hill figure to be displayed alongside each other. Each print is made with varying earthy tones to depict the changing light cast across the landscape during dawn and dusk.

One of Wiltshire’s earliest white horses, the graceful Cherhill White Horse was created by Dr Christopher Alsop in 1780. This chalk figure has a spirited, sprightly manner that leaps out from the surrounding landscape of quiet, rolling hills.

This commission was really exciting to work on and I worked closely with my client, emailing throughout the project from the preliminary sketches to the final prints. These collagraphs are mixed media, printed onto textured, prepared paper. The highly textured, collagraph plate used to produce each print was made using cardboard, carborundum grit and other materials.

The Cherhill White Horse was one of three White Horses commissioned, the others commissioned were Broad Town White Horse and Uffington White Horse.
