Today I decided to produce a print from my collagraph plate: ‘Undulating Roots’. This plate was made after a spectacular walk in the Brecon Beacons earlier this year. The riverside walk with its scenery of waterfalls, roots and moss covered trees as well as the occasional dibber was exquisite. Never had I come across somewhere with quite so many roots. It was truly awe inspiring.
For my first layer, I used a yellow ochre colour. The aim here was to have this colour quite subtle in the background to help give depth to the print and occasionally appear from beneath the layers.
For the second layer, I mixed a rich copper, brown colour to give the piece added warmth and contrast.
Finally, I applied a layer of purple to soften the print adding atmosphere and cooler tones.
The warm layers beneath are complimented by the cooler purple hues that tone the piece down. The copper tones help to give the print its intriguing appeal.
